The Provincial Approach
The provincial government is committed to environmental stewardship , which is reflected in its goal:
“To lead the world in sustainable environmental management, with
the best air and water quality, and the best fisheries management, bar none.”
Consistent with this goal, the Ministry of Environment continues to pursue its mission to:
“Lead, inform, involve, and support British Columbians to achieve
the best environmental stewardship and sustainability.”
To achieve its mandate the ministry continues to: administer legislation; establish guidelines, standards and policies; manage compliance; and maintain and develop new services and programs.
More specifically, the ministry:
- Promotes the sustainable
use of B.C.’s natural resources
- Implements climate change
initiatives
- Provides water and air quality monitoring
- Helps to ensure sustainable marine fisheries, protected areas and ocean resources
- Maintains healthy and diverse native species and ecosystems
- Ensures recreational and wildlife opportunities are available
- Encourages environmental stewardship through education, outreach and partnerships
- Promotes and monitors compliance
with regulatory requirements through awareness, education and incentives
- Enforces compliance with regulatory requirements when necessary
Other B.C. ministries have a number of environmental stewardship initiatives. Highlights include:
The Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources - leads an energy efficiency program for British Columbians to reduce both their carbon footprint and their energy costs through incentives to make their homes more efficient.
The Ministry of Community Services – includes:
The government acknowledges that these commitments cannot be achieved without involvement from all British Columbians. Environmental stewardship relies on the collective knowledge, commitment and actions of individuals, organizations, industry, communities and all levels of government.
