All 2017 opportunities have been filled. We are now accepting applications for 2018. Thank you very much for your interest in this opportunity.

Kakwa Provincial Park

The Volunteer Park Host Program is a hospitality service to park visitors. The role of the host is to enhance visitor services and to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere for park visitors. By greeting park visitors and providing them with information about things to do in the park and surrounding area, volunteer park hosts offer an important service.

Kakwa Provincial Park has limited volunteer host opportunities for the summer operating season. Summer hosts are flown in via helicopter therefore a minimum three week stay is required and longer stays are preferred (4-6 weeks). The ability to live in isolation for a long period of time is required. Hosts must be self-sufficient and have the ability to plan for an isolated stay with no re-supply opportunities.. BC Parks require two park hosts on site for safety considerations.

Hosting duties consist of:
  • greeting visitors to Kakwa Lake and collecting data such as where visitors are from and where they are going in the park,;
  • keeping facilities clean and functional;
  • trail clearing and maintenance;
  • facility maintenance;
  • performing small projects/tasks; and,
  • reporting to the Area Supervisor on a scheduled basis.

These duties leave many hours for the hosts to enjoy hiking, exploring, wildlife viewing, photography, and other outdoor activities.

The park host’s accommodation is Kakwa Park headquarters cabin. The cabin is equipped with solar power, propane stove and fridge, along with cooking supplies. It does not have running water. Also, the hosts will be provided the use of communication systems to permit regular safety check ins.
