Our learning resource, Protected Areas: Preserving Our Future, helps students and teachers look at the questions of what we protect, why we protect it, and how we protect it, in the context of the home, the community, and the natural world. These topics are further reinforced by local case-study activities that can be used in nearby protected areas.

  • Introduction - includes information on protected areas in British Columbia, key educational concepts, suggested routes through the guide, as well as curriculum links to intermediate science and social studies' learning outcomes.
  • Section 1 What Does Protection Mean? - taps into students' experiences of protection.
  • Section 2 Why Do We Protect? - explores differences of opinion and some of the costs and benefits.
  • Section 3 How Do We Decide What To Protect? - investigates some of the scientific data and offers practice in decision making.
  • Section 4 Decisions, Decisions: A Protected Areas' Case Study - brings together the many aspects of protection in a simulation of real life Processes that include public hearings, role plays and group work using real maps and data to make decisions about protecting areas.
  • Section 5 Protection in Action! - contains action guidelines and goals, plus ideas and suggestions for individual and collective action projects.
