Babine Mountains Provincial Park
HIKING TRAILS
LYON CREEK TRAIL
(10 km, 4-5 hours)
The trailhead is located 3.5 km past Driftwood Canyon Park. A steady
climb of less than 2 hours leads hikers into the alpine (1450 m).
The trail is well defined and boardwalk spans several swampy sections.
Beyond tree line the grade eases, and hikers can enjoy spectacular
views of the Bulkley Valley and the Telkwa Range. The trail swings
east as it descends to cross Lyon Creek before traversing Ramrock
Pass (1450 m). From this point, hikers descend into Ganokwa Basin.
The trail then heads out of the basin, past two mountain lakes,
and climbs northeastward onto a grassy slope. Orange trail markers
lead hikers to “The Summit”, the divide of the Ganokwa,
Driftwood and Little Joe Creek watersheds and the intersection
of the Lyon Creek, Little Joe Creek and McCabe trails.
HARVEY MOUNTAIN TRAIL
(5 km, 2hours)
The trail is located 1 km south of the Driftwood Road parking area.
Pull off at the trailhead available. A steady climb takes hikers
into an open alpine hillside with views of Silver King Basin, Hudson
Bay Mountain and the Bulkley Valley.
McCABE TRAIL
(8 km, 3-4 hours)
Highly recommended for family and novice hikes, the McCabe Trail
offers relatively easy access to the alpine. The trail departs
the Driftwood Creek Road immediately before Sunny Point. After
ascending a steep mining road for 500 m, the route narrows to
an excellent trail on an easy grade. At the 3 km mark, the trail
winds
through a series of rockslides, which are densely covered by
slide alder and cow parsnip. Hikers should use caution for the
next kilometer
as the vegetation obscures the trail and footing can be slippery.
The trail travels along the north slopes of Harvey and Pyramid
mountains, and passes two small lakes at 6.5 km. It continues
upward and eastward until reaching “The Summit”.
SILVER KING BASIN TRAIL
(9 km, 2-3 hours)
The trail departs Driftwood Creek Road at Sunny Point. It follows
an easy grade through the trees for most of the way. Some muddy
sections must be crossed. Hikers will enjoy the sub-alpine meadows
of the Silver King Basin. Peak bloom occurs in mid-July. The trail
continues past the Joe L’Orsa Cabin en route to the headwaters
of Driftwood Creek and Hyland Pass
FLETCHER-GARDNER TRAIL
(13 km, 4-5 hours)
The trail is an overnight hike to Reiseter Lake. The Reiseter Lake
shoreline provides limited flat ground suitable for camping. The
lake contains small rainbow trout.
LITTLE JOE CREEK TRAIL
(9 km, 3-4 hours)
The trail begins from a parking lot accessible by turning left
at 32 km on the Babine Lake Road. It follows an easy uphill grade
along the north bank of Little Joe Creek for 5 km and emerges into
an open basin. The Higgins Creek and Four Lakes trails leave the
trail in this area. The Little Joe Creek Trail continues south
and then north 1 km past the Higgins Creek junction into the beautiful
alpine valley of Little Joe Lakes. The trail does not lead directly
to the lakes but parallels them on its ascent to “The Summit”.
ONION MOUNTAIN ROAD/TRAIL
(6 km, 3 hours)
This trail leaves the Old Babine Lake Road 3.5 km northwest of
the Babine Lake Road junction. It provides easy access to the open
meadows of the Ganokwa Basin, a special attraction in July when
the meadows are in bloom.
CRONIN
CREEK ROAD/TRAIL
(16.5 km, 5-6 hours)
The gravel road/trail departs the Babine Lake Road at 34.5 km. It leads north
for about 5 km and then travels northwest, across Cronin Creek. To access the
Cronin Creek Trail, continue 5 km northwest past the Higgins Creek Road to the
former mine site. From the mine site, the trail climbs steeply through a series
of switchbacks for nearly 3 km. Along the way, hikers will see remnants of past
mining operations. At 1800 m, the trail reaches a beautiful alpine environment
on the northeast shoulder of Mount Cronin. The Cronin Creek valley and Babine
Lake area can be seen in the distance. From this point the trail continues west
and passes the beautiful Hyland Lakes to the south as it leads to Hyland Pass.
HYLAND
PASS TRAIL
(1.5 km, 1 hour)
This trail serves as a connector between the Cronin Creek and Silver King Basin
trails. The pass is the saddle between Mount Cronin and Mount Hyland, the two
highest peaks in the Park.
HIGGINS
CREEK TRAIL
(8 km, 3-4 hours)
Higgins Creek Trail departs the Cronin Creek Road/Trail approximately 5 km from
the turnoff from Babine Lake Road. The trail heads southwest, following Higgins
Creek. You will find the remnants of a historic mining camp at the headwaters
of Higgins Creek. The trail travels south over Eagle Pass to intersect the Little
Joe Creek Trail.
