From Monument 78 the trail slowly begins climbing and follows Route Creek towards Castle Pass. At 2 km, from the monument, you get a very good view of Castle Peak off to the right. Water bottles should be filled here as Castle Pass and Frosty Pass can be dry at times. Castle Pass is reached at 5 km and can be a nice spring camp if water is available.

Here the Boundary Trail forks to Ross Lake or the Pacific Crest Trail continues to Woody Pass. The 2 km climb to Frosty Pass is unrelenting but the hiker is rewarded with spectacular views of Blizzard Peak to the right and Mt. Winthrop to the left.

At this point one can do a 1 hour scramble up the south ridge to the peak of Mt. Winthrop at 2393 m. Continuing along you arrive at a good camp, with water, 1.5 km from Frosty Pass. At the bottom of the switch backs Frosty Lake side trail is found to the right and The Parks side trail is found to the left approximately 4 km from Frosty Pass.

Once in the valley you follow Frosty Creek for approximately 9 km until the Pasayten/Monument 83 junction is reached. Taking the Monument 83 trail the Chuchuwanteen River (spelled "Chuwanten" in Canada) is crossed. The ford may be tough in spring as the bridge is washed out. At this point you are 19 km from Monument 78.

From here the trail climbs 5 km to Monument 83 on a continuously steep trail. Another trail junction is reached approximately 1 km before the monument. This trail will take you down to the Pasayten River. A good camp with water (Monument Spring) is reached just beyond the junction and the Monument is 0.5 km further.
