Elk Lakes Provincial Park

Camping

There are four areas n the Elk Lakes Provincial Park where camping is permitted:

Lower Elk Lake: This area offers toilets, firepits, food cache, and tent pads on the north side of the lake in the trees.

Upper Elk Lake: This campsite is located on a gravel terrace on the east side of Petain Creek approximately 1 km past the south end of Upper Elk Lake. Amenities include toilet, food cache, tent pads and group fire rings.

Petain Basin: This is a mountaineering bivouac site located near Petain Glacier above Petain Creek above Petain Falls. Access is via the mountaineering route (see description in "Route" section under hiking). Please note that there is not a bridge to cross Petain Creek. Overnight visitors are asked to camp on the gravel flats beside the creek. The basin is a fragile alpine environment; campers must be self-sufficient and practice minimal impact camping, as no facilities are provided. Fires are not permitted.

Cadorna Creek Watershed: Camping is also permitted in the Cadorna Creek Watershed. The backcountry campground at Abruzzi Lake offers a pit toilet, metal fire ring and two tent pads. Please use existing rock rings and impacted campsites throughout the Cadorna Watershed. Where there are no existing campsites, please practice minimum impact camping.

Fishing

A favourite activity of many park visitors is angling in the Elk River, Cadorna Creek and lakes throughout Elk Lakes Provincial Park. Species include Dolly Varden, Rocky Mountain whitefish and Cutthroat trout. The best time period for fishing is right after break-up and from September to freeze-up. Fishing in the river and main lakes is poor during run-off (July-August). Please don't clean fish in lakes or waterways. Dispose of fish remains in your campfire or pack them out of the park for disposal. Do not disturb spawning fish. Please assist the Park Ranger in collecting biological information about your fish. Anglers require a BC fishing licence and should check BC Regulations for special restrictions.
