Draft Garibaldi Park Management Plan Amendment

In January 2012 BC Parks initiated a management plan amendment process for Garibaldi Park. The management plan amendment is focussed on what is referred to here as the “Spearhead Area” of Garibaldi Park. The purpose of the plan amendment process is to revisit the management direction in the 1990 Garibaldi Park Master Plan for the Spearhead Area of Garibaldi Park to confirm the existing direction regarding public access and to provide supplemental direction required for emerging issues.

The Spearhead Area (the study area) encompasses the Spearhead and Fitzsimmons mountain ranges which together form a horseshoe of mountains connecting Blackcomb Mountain to Whistler Mountain. The study area includes a portion of the park from Wedge Creek southwest to the north side of Cheakamus Lake, and south and east following the boundary of the Natural Environment Zone as illustrated in the attached map. A management plan amendment is a focused exercise that involves updating specific management direction in an existing plan. We are proposing to amend the sections of the 1990 Garibaldi Park Master Plan related to: land management, cultural resources, hiking/backpacking, mountain biking, winter recreation, and commercial recreation services. All changes to management direction will apply to the study area only.
