Protected Area renamed to Hisnit River Watershed Protected Area
To recognize Indigenous history and culture, the Power River Watershed Protected Area has been renamed the Hisnit River Watershed Protected Area. The protected area is significant to the Ka:’yu:k’t’h’/Che:k’tles7et’h’ (Kie-you-cut and Chek-le-seth) First Nations since the Power River Estuary is the location of a former village site called Hisnit.
About This Protected Area

Hisnit River Watershed Protected Area was established in March 2011 to fulfill Maa-nulth First Nations Final Agreement commitments with regards to the Ka:’yu:’k’t’h’/Che:k’tles7et’h’ First Nations’ harvest of Monumental Cedar and Cypress for cultural purposes.
This protected area protects almost the entire Hisnit River watershed, including Power Lake.
Protected Area Size: 1,680 hectares
Date Established: April 11, 2011

Mquqᵂin Provincial Park) and Ka:’yu:’k’t’h’/Che:k’tles7et’h’ First Nations Lands at the Power River Estuary (Hisnit).
