Project Assessment Officer

Annual Salary Range   $62,500 – $71,500

The Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) offers a truly rewarding public service experience. The Office is well respected both inside and outside of government and continues to attract and retain highly qualified, motivated and professional staff.  The Office operates under a matrix management model to assign staff to project teams offering officers an opportunity to work with a number of different managers and teams and providing them with a greater variety of projects and learning experiences.

EAO staff work in consultation with proponents, federal and provincial review agencies, the public and First Nations to manage the environmental assessment process, which is designed to assess the potential environmental, economic, social, heritage and health effects of proposed major projects in BC, as well as any potential impacts on Aboriginal rights and title.

The key responsibilities of the Project Assessment Officer are to assess and analyze technical studies and the consultation programs of projects and to formulate preliminary conclusions on the environmental assessment findings.

To be considered for a Project Assessment Officer position you generally require a university degree in resource or environmental management, business/public administration or law, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.  In addition to the educational requirement, strong oral and written communication skills, the ability to manage multiple projects under pressure with minimal supervision, and the ability to review, analyze and make recommendations are important attributes.

“I like working for the EAO because it’s a dynamic organization that encourages my professional development in a wide array of skills.  Also, one of my favourite things about my job is that the projects are based in many different locations around BC and, as a result, I learn more about the geography of the province and the issues the communities face.”
