There are several key steps in fish and wildlife project management starting with identifying an issue, problem or opportunity; bringing together a team of skilled people to critically address the issue; identifying the path(s) to a solution; mustering resources for implementation; and monitoring and evaluating results.

Over the last 10 years there has been a shift to less reliance on base project funding within provincial ministries to partnered funding and in-kind contributions from a multitude of non-governmental organizations, corporate and other government (first nations, regional, municipal) sectors. This has been paralleled with resource management decision-making focused more closely on individual communities and watersheds, with a significant increase in public involvement.

In my opinion, these developments have put a much greater onus on provincial project managers to be active facilitators and problem solvers who can work with diverse (sometimes competing) interests, effectively communicate a "vision" and integrate and support skilled people necessary to achieve desired project results. For me, this has been the most challenging and rewarding part of my job as Manager, Salmon and Steelhead Recovery Program for the Ministry.
