Data Custodianship
Data Custodianship
is fundamental to implementing a mature Data Management culture. MSRM
has recognized this requirement and is undertaking development and implementation
of formal data custodianship roles and responsibilities.
The Need for
Data Custodianship
The Government of British Columbia, its business partners, and the public
demonstrate a clear reliance on land and resource information. Mining,
farming, forestry, transport, tourism, planning - all make use of diverse
forms of land and resource data.
While the trend is towards increased data application, full utilization
is not achievable until underlying data is acquired, maintained and
managed in a coordinated manner.
The Benefits of Data Custodianship
Custodianship is at the heart of information management. It establishes
accountability for information and identifies authoritative sources
that give users a measure of consistency and certainty. Commonly applied
custodianship:
- provides a trustee
and standards bearer for information
- eliminates redundancy
in the collection and maintenance of information
- manages information
on behalf of the entire enterprise
- provides a sound
land and resource information infrastructure
- assists the
production and management of land and resource information products
- facilitates
the collection of information
Data
Custodianship Guidelines are intended to assist custodians
in the uniform application of Custodianship principles. The context
for Data Custodianship defines these principles as well as objectives,
standards and roles. Custodianship rights and obligations are defined
according to ten life cycle activities associated with fundamental data
sets. The documentation includes several illustrative examples, a glossary
and references.
