Methods & Standards

Broad Ecosystem Inventory consists of mapped units on the earth's surface. These units are delineated following a number of RISC[formerly RIC] standard ecological land classifications. The mapped features are described using non-spatial attribute information. Themes are selected and displayed as cartographic products. To keep track of all of the above, metadata is stored on both BEI databases and Geographic Information System (GIS) objects (themes, features, and maps).

The Methods and Standards section provides information on how BEI maps are compiled, stored and maintained over time.
