How Instruments are Calibrated and Maintained

Technicians visit the stations monthly and perform checks to ensure the equipment is working properly. The technicians are responsible for reporting any major instrument problems to Ministry of Environment data validation staff. If an instrument is cited as having problems, then the data is flagged as suspicious.

The Ministry of Environment has adopted Environment Canada's Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for instrument calibration and maintenance.

Further guidelines on manual and automated monitoring can also be found in the British Columbia Field Sampling Manual.

In addition, the provincial audit team performs twice-yearly audits on the stations to ensure that all equipment is working properly. Also, visit How We Audit Industry, Auditing Procedures and Audit Standards.
