Antifreeze Regulation
The British Columbia Antifreeze Regulation requires the addition of a bittering agent (denatonium benzoate) to antifreeze and engine coolant sold in the province in order to protect the health of humans and pets. Ethylene glycol-based antifreeze is the most common type of antifreeze commercially sold and has a sweet taste which has been linked to a number of poisonings of animals and small children. In response, the government of British Columbia has mandated the addition of denatonium benzoate to ethylene glycol antifreeze sold at the retail level in British Columbia in order to make it less palatable.
The Antifreeze Regulation was approved on March 31, 2009 and comes into effect on January 1, 2011.
