Waste discharges from the pulp, paper and lumber industries are governed by regulations and codes of practice under the Environmental Management Act. The Environmental Protection Division's role in regulating these industries is to set standards to protect human health and the environment and to enforce those standards. Waste discharges from the pulp, paper and lumber industries typically include liquid effluent, solid waste and air emissions.
The ministry is currently developing a Primary Wood Manufacturing Industry Code of Practice and intends to amend the Wood Residue and Incineration Regulation to phase out beehive burners.
