Conditions on Fumigation Certificates and Licences
Background Information
During routine inspections of fumigations, ministry staff became aware of numerous dangerous fumigation practices. These include applicators working alone, applicators not wearing appropriate respiratory protection, fumigations being conducted when unprotected bystanders are nearby, aerations occurring in unsecured areas and inadequate monitoring of fumigant gas levels.
The ministry is very concerned about these issues. To help ensure that fumigations are performed safely, according to pesticide labels and current standards, the ministry now places conditions on fumigation certificates and user licences. The conditions help applicators plan and conduct safe fumigations and enable ministry inspectors to better conduct inspections to ensure that standards are met.
