Consultation Process on the Cosmetic Use of Pesticides
The Speech from the Throne delivered August, 2009, stated that “British Columbians will be consulted on new statutory protections to further safeguard the environment from cosmetic chemical pesticides.”
It is the government’s intention to seek input on this issue and then determine if, and how, legislation could be amended to address concerns about cosmetic pesticide use.
The Ministry of Environment has contracted C. Rankin & Associates to support the consultation process and work with ministry staff coordinating the effort. The ministry is preparing a consultation paper, information and questions for consideration. The consultation materials will be posted on the ministry website and British Columbians will be invited to review and comment on them.
C. Rankin & Associates will review and summarize all comments received through the consultation process and the ministry will post this, along with information about next steps planned to address this topic, in the spring of 2010.
The BC Government enacted the Integrated Pest Management Act in 2004. Under the Integrated Pest Management Act, the Ministry of Environment sets requirements for pesticide sales and use. The BC Government requires that pest control service companies practice Integrated Pest Management (IPM), which involves consideration of alternatives to pesticides. The IPM Regulation also requires that people be notified when pesticides are used in or around multi-residence buildings and playgrounds.
