Lead-Acid Batteries

Program Funding

The lead-acid battery transportation incentive program is funded from revenue collected from a consumer levy established in 1990 under the Social Service Tax Act, with the revenue going to the Sustainable Environment Fund (SEF).

Collected at point-of-sale, lead-acid battery levies are remitted by retailers to the Ministry of Finance (see Ministry of Finance Bulletin SST 015). These funds form part of the Ministry of Environment budget for Environmental Protection.  SEF funds support transportation incentives for lead-acid battery collectors to encourage recycling when lead market prices are low.  Any remaining funds support other environmental initiatives such as those outlined in the SEF Program Summary.
