Airshed Management Planning in the Cariboo
Airshed Management Planning (AMP) in the Cariboo Region was initiated in November of 1999 as a way to improve air quality in the communities of Williams Lake and Quesnel. The AMP process is community driven in both cities and is funded through partnerships between the Ministry of Environment, the City of Quesnel, the City of Williams Lake, the Cariboo Regional District and the Ministry of Health and Human Resources Development Canada. Our goal is to tackle all sources of air pollution from backyard residential burning to large industrial sources.
Quesnel continues to experience some of the poorest air quality in the province while Williams Lake remains in the top five poorest (to end of 1998). It was therefore determined that the AMP process should begin in Quesnel. This is a five year project aimed at not only producing airshed management plans for both communities, but also implementing the recommendations while maintaining jobs.
