Lang Creek, Powell River, BC
Lang Creek is located in Powell River, BC and supports salmonid and non-salmonid fish species. Salmonids documented in Lang Creek include coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch), chinook salmon (O. tshawytscha), chum salmon (O. keta), sockeye salmon (O. nerka), pink salmon (O. gorbuscha), cutthroat trout (O. clarki clarki) and rainbow/steelhead trout (O. mykiss). Since 1997, water temperature data have been collected automatically (every 15 minutes) at several sites in the Lang Creek system.
This study evaluates recent potential impacts (1998 - 2004) of warm stream temperatures on salmonids, and estimates future potential impacts to salmonid populations based on water temperatures predicted under various climate change scenarios (increased air temperatures). The report also recommends water quality objectives for temperature that are based on both the magnitude and duration of the exposure.
