Lower Mainland Region EPD

Ground Water Monitoring

Ground water monitoring and assessment activities of the Environmental Quality Section are carried out by a regional hydrogeologist (ground water specialist) and a water technician.

Ground water monitoring and assessment activities support the ministry's goal of protecting the environment and human health and safety by ensuring clean and safe water. Activities carried out by regional ground water staff include:

  • Collection and assessment of ground water quality data as part of the Ambient Ground Water Quality Monitoring Network. The network consists of 19 observation well sites, 15 domestic well sites, a spring site and 34 community water well sites, all within the six major aquifers in the region. The six main 1A Type (1A=highly productive and highly vulnerable) aquifers in the Lower Mainland Region are:
    1. Vedder Fan Aquifer - Chilliwack
    2. Abbotsford-Sumas Aquifer - Abbotsford / Langley
    3. Hopington Aquifer - Langley
    4. Brookswood Aquifer - Langley / Surrey
    5. Belcarra Aquifer - Belcarra
    6. Green Lake Aquifer - Emerald Estates, Whistler
  • Providing input to the formulation and implementation of Legislation and Regulations dealing with ground water development and aquifer protection.
  • Collection and processing of ground water data from water well drilling contractors, consultants, health and other government agencies and the general public. Water well record data can be accessed on the provincial government website at:
    http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/wsd/plan_protect_sustain/groundwater/wells.html
  • Operation and maintenance of the provincial Observation Well Network. This consists of the collection and processing of continuous and monthly ground water level data from 19 well / piezometer locations within the region. Processed data in the form of water level hydrographs can be viewed at http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/wsd/plan_protect_sustain/groundwater/wells/gwsmaps.html
  • Assessment of aquifers and providing input to development of aquifer maps.
  • Reviewing and assessing environmental impact assessment reports related to major ground water projects.
  • Conducting preliminary hydrogeologic investigations related to drinking water quality health issues and writing technical reports.
  • Investigating, monitoring and reporting on ground water level and ground water quality trends.
  • Responding to ground water enquiries from public, consultants, water well drilling contractors and government agencies.
  • Liaising with various federal, provincial and municipal government agencies to discuss regional ground water issues, management of ground water resources and ground water protection.
  • Promoting ground water education to the public.
