Ambient Water Quality Monitoring in Kilgaard Creek in 2001

This report presents the results of monitoring undertaken by a Sumas First Nations (SFN) youth team in 2001. The objectives of the sampling were to:

  • determine water quality conditions in Kilgaard Creek, and
  • assess the effects of local land use activities on water quality.

Grab samples were collected on five dates between August and November of 2001 at five locations in Kilgaard Creek. Samples were analyzed for pH, turbidity, nutrients, non-filterable residue, metals and the bacteriological indicator fecal coliforms. Water temperature and dissolved oxygen were also recorded on each sampling date.

Water quality criteria for the protection of aquatic life were exceeded, or close to being exceeded, for the following parameters:

  • water temperature
  • dissolved oxygen 30-day mean criteria for buried embryos and alevins
  • suspended sediment and turbidity
  • iron
  • arsenic
  • cadmium
  • zinc

More detailed sampling is necessary to determine whether the following parameters exceeded criteria:

  • aluminum
  • chromium
  • dissolved oxygen, nitrite, copper, selenium and zinc

Many of the water quality conditions in Kilgaard Creek are consistent with stormwater impacts in a moderately developed watershed with a compromised riparian area. If water quality monitoring were to resume in the watershed, automated monitoring or more frequent grab sampling is recommended.
