Olympics and Sea-to-Sky Projects

Preparations for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games are providing a unique opportunity to showcase the division's accomplishments in facilitating the clean-up of contaminated sites and the redevelopment of underutilized community lands (brownfields).

Britannia - The Provincial Government acts as both the statutory regulator and the remediator, on behalf of the potential responsible parties, at the Britannia Mine Site. Different provincial ministries are responsible for carrying out these separate functions.

The role of remediator on behalf of potential responsible parties is taken by the Ministry of Agriculture and Land. It maintains a web page dedicated to this site.

  • Archived Britannia Orders and Correspondence provide information about the regulatory process, including orders issued under the Environmental Management Act, and correspondence between the Director and various parties associated with the Britannia Mine site.

Southeast False Creek, Vancouver - Former industrial properties along the southeast shore of False Creek are being remediated under ministry approval to create a model sustainable community which will accommodate the Vancouver Athlete's Village for the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Former Municipal Landfill, Whistler - Whistler's Olympic Athlete's Village will be developed adjacent to the recently closed Whistler Municipal Landfill and alongside the Cheakamus River. Following the Olympics, the development will become a permanent legacy neighbourhood for the Resort Municipality of Whistler which will incorporate Smart Growth and sustainable design principles.

Convention Centre Expansion Project, Vancouver - Clean up of this waterfront site represents the final piece of a multi-phase remediation project addressing the south shore of Coal Harbour. The Convention Centre expansion will accommodate 10,000 international broadcasters in a combined media centre for the Olympics.

Trail: Upper Columbia River

The Teck Cominco Trail smelter is located in the West Kootenay region of the province and is centered approximately 15 km north of the international border. The smelter remains an operating facility but historic and current emissions and discharges associated with the operations have resulted in wide-spread contamination throughout the lower Columbia River valley.

Teck Cominco is currently pursuing the development of a remediation plan under the authority of the Environmental Management Act and Contaminated Sites Regulation to address the contamination. The remediation plan will be informed by a wide-area ecological risk assessment and a human health risk assessment that are being conducted concurrently. The objective of the remediation plan is to “restore the environmental quality of the site to a condition that does not pose unacceptable risks to humans or ecological resources”. The ministry maintains regulatory oversight and involvement in the project through participation in several administrative and technical committees.
