Request for Comments – Proposed Matrix Soil Standards for Barium

Barium and particularly barite (barium sulphate) is used in a number of industries. The most common use of barium as barite is as a weighting agent in the drilling of oil and gas wells. Generic soil quality standards for barium are currently provided in Schedule 4 of the Contaminated Sites Regulation.
To enhance regulatory options available to proponents in the assessment and remediation of barium contaminated sites, the ministry wishes to replace the current Schedule 4 generic soil standards in the Regulation with new Schedule 5 matrix soil standards.
The ministry has now developed proposed barium matrix soil standards which were derived in accordance with the ministry’s Contaminated Sites Standards Task Group procedures.
The proposed barium matrix soil standards and the details related to their derivation are provided in the following report:
