2.4 EMS WR User Interface

This screen image highlights the main elements of a web page in EMS WR, which are described in detail below:

EMS WR main elements

The next sections describe EMS WR screen elements:

top

2.4.1 Browser title bar

The browser title bar tells you where you are on the internet, and what type of browser you are using. While you are logged on to EMS WR, the browser title bar will always display Environmental Monitoring System - [Browser name].

2.4.2 Browser and EMS WR navigation buttons

Browser navigation buttons are not part of EMS WR and should generally not be used to move around. For example, this image shows browser navigation buttons for Internet Explorer:

Instead, move within the system by clicking on EMS WR navigation buttons
(e.g.
EMS WR navigation button).

! Caution: using the browser navigation buttons to change screens is likely to cause system errors. If this occurs, try using the EMS WR navigation buttons to move to the desired page. If you are still having problems, you might have to logon again.

There is one exception to this general rule: when you are viewing an Adobe PDF file within your Internet browser, you must use the browser's Back button to return to EMS WR.

2.4.3 EMS WR menu bar

The EMS WR menu bar does not change when you move around the system. From the menu bar, you always have access to these links:

  • Log Off — logs off the user
  • Help — opens the EMS WR 1.1 User Manual
  • Government of British Columbia — opens the Provincial Government website
  • Ministry of Sustainable Resource Management — opens the ministry website
  • Ministry of Environment — opens the ministry website

2.4.4 Data window

EMS WR displays most of its information in the data window (or screen). This is also where you will enter information into the system for searching, producing reports, and creating graphs.

2.4.5 Scrollbars

EMS WR data windows will sometimes have horizontal or vertical scrollbars. Scrollbars indicate that more information exists outside the viewable area of the screen or window. By clicking on the scrollbar, you can access information that is not displayed on the screen.

2.4.6 Browser status bar

The browser status bar tells you whether the system is performing a task. For example, this is an active Internet Explorer 6.0 status bar indicating that EMS WR is creating an exceedance graph:

Some information requests can take a long time to process. In general, you should wait until the system completes an action before clicking any navigation buttons or menu bar links.

! Caution: if you click buttons or links before the status bar is clear, the system will interpret this as a new command and stop the first request. For example, if you click the graph button before a graph is finished, the system treats the last click as a new graph request and restarts processing. This will delay your results.
