The Quarterly Compliance and Enforcement Summary demonstrates the Ministry of Environment's commitment to being publicly accountable for achieving its environmental protection responsibilities.

The ministry establishes and administers a suite of environmental requirements aimed at protecting various aspects of our environment, human health and safety. These requirements can only be effective, however, if the parties subject to the requirements comply with them. For this reason, ensuring compliance is one of the ministry's key objectives.

In order to achieve the highest rates of compliance with environmental requirements, the ministry undertakes a range of compliance promotion activities, including information, education and outreach. Staff resources are also dedicated to inspecting, monitoring and auditing activities to determine compliance rates.

Compliance and enforcement responses highlighted in the Quarterly Compliance and Enforcement Summary are guided by the ministry's Compliance and Enforcement Policy and Procedure. This policy ensures a fair, consistent and structured response to regulatory non-compliance.

Included in the Compliance and Enforcement Summary:

Orders

• issued when action is required to prevent or stop actual or potential impact to the environment, human health or safety. Orders are issued under the authority of the Dike Maintenance Act, Environmental Management Act, Park Act, Water Act and Wildlife Act.

Administrative Sanctions (Licensing actions under the Wildlife Act)

• are licensing actions under Section 24 of the Wildlife Act against individual licence holders (hunting, angling, and firearm) for committing offences and/or failing to meet conditions or expectations.
• are licensing actions under Section 61 of the Wildlife Act against commercial licence holders (angling guides, guide outfitters, trappers and fur traders) for committing offences and/or failing to meet conditions or expectations.
• are licence cancellations/suspensions under Section 85 of the Wildlife Act against individual and commercial licence holders for failure to pay fines.
• These licensing actions are in addition to any other fines or penalties that have been imposed.

Tickets

• applies to all tickets paid, deemed guilty by non-payment or expiry, or contested in court and found guilty by a judge. These include all applicable ministry legislation, as well as federal legislation where the ministry has taken action, e.g., Fisheries Act (Canada).

Court Convictions

• applies to all court convictions of ministry legislation, as well as federal legislation where the ministry has taken action, e.g., Fisheries Act (Canada).
