Eco-art Helps Conservation Effort at Victoria Elementary School
Eco-art, consisting of brightly coloured, hand-painted salmon made from plywood, is the result of the Stream of Dreams program that came to Oaklands elementary school in Victoria recently. The program focuses on water, watersheds, streams and oceans by creating a lasting art legacy to beautify and inspire the community. Environment Minister Barry Penner visited the school Nov. 28, 2007 and is pictured here with some of the members of the Grade 5 class painting their own fish. Hundreds of the fish were later attached to a fence at the school, providing a community mural that reminds residents of the importance of small streams and how they impact on fish.
The Stream of Dreams Murals Society’s mission is to educate communities about their watersheds, rivers and streams while dazzling them with the charm of community art. The society held a session at Oaklands elementary school in Victoria and Environment Minister Barry Penner was there Nov. 28, 2007 to help some of the Grade 5 class paint their own fish. The finished plywood cut-outs were later attached to a fence at the school to form a colourful mural. The program has been presented at more than 180 schools and community events in three provinces to more than 62,000 participants since its inception in 2000.
