Central Okanagan Broadleaf Woodlands (BW)

Broadleaf woodland ecosystems occur on sites where succession has resulted in a broadleaf overstory in the climax stage.

Aspen Copse Ecosystems (BW:ac)

Aspen copse ecosystems occur in broad, moist depressions in grassland areas. They are typically small ecosystems with trembling aspen overstories and shrubby understories dominated by common snowberry and roses. Soils are medium-textured. These sites are rich as the yearly input of leaf litter is quickly decomposed and mixed into the upper soil horizon by soil organisms.

Aspen Seepage Ecosystems (BW:as)

Aspen seepage ecosystems occur on slopes with subsurface seepage in a matrix of coniferous forests. These ecosystems are moist and rich as a result of nutrient inputs from seepage and the annual input of leaf litter. They have trembling aspen overstories and diverse, shrubby understories. Soils are typically medium-textured.

Status of Broadleaf Woodlands

Broadleaf woodland ecosystems are isolated and uncommon; covering only 0.3% of the study area (95 ha). All broadleaf woodland ecosystems are a high priority for conservation.
