Sensitive Ecosystems Inventories

TFL 15 SEI Home Page

This project includes Terrestrial Ecosystem Mapping with Wildlife Habitat Assessment themes. Wildlife Habitat Ratings were developed for the white-headed woodpecker (Picoides albolarvatus), Williamson's sapsucker (Sphyrapicus thyroideus), elk (Cervus elaphus), lynx (Lynx canadensis) and mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus). A Sensitive Ecosystems Inventory theme was later created on the TEM mapping.

Terrestrial Ecosystem Mapping (TEM) was completed to support wildlife and wildlife habitat inventory objectives as well as a number of forest management objectives for the licensee.  the province identified a need for a Sensitive Ecosystems Inventory for the entire Okanagan valley; TFL 15 fulfills part of that requirement.

The western boundary of the TFL occurs east of Highway 97 and extends north to south from approximately Okanagan Falls to Oliver. The Nelson/Kamloops Forest Region boundary best represents the eastern boundary. The study area is approx. 49,100 ha. It partially covers map sheets: 82E.004, 82E.005, 82E.014, 82E.015, 82E.024, 82E.025, 82E.034, 82E.035 and 82E.036. The study area is situated in the Northern Okanagan Highland and the Southern Okanagan Basin Ecosections. It includes the following Biogeoclimatic subzone variants:

  • Very Dry Hot Ponderosa Pine Variant (PPxh1),
  • Okanagan Very Dry Hot Interior Douglas-fir Variant (IDFxh1),
  • Kettle Dry Mild Interior Douglas-fir Variant (IDFdm1),
  • Okanagan Dry Mild Montane Spruce Variant (MSdm1),
  • Okanagan Dry Cold Engelmann spruce - Subalpine Fir Variant (ESSFdc1),
  • Okanagan Dry Cold Engelmann spruce - Subalpine Fir Upper Elevational Variant (ESSFdcu)
  • Okanagan Dry Cold Engelmann spruce - Subalpine Fir Parkland Variant (ESSFdcp1).

The TEM and WHR was initiated and funded by Weyerhaeuser Canada Ltd., Okanagan Falls, British Columbia.  The SEI was initiated and completed by staff at the BC Ministry of Environment Lands and Parks.

The project follows the Standard for Mapping Terrestrial Ecosystems in B.C., 1998 and the Standard for Mapping Ecosystems at Risk in B.C., 2006.

The TEM and WHR mapping was completed in 2000 at 1:20,000 scale. The SEI was updated in 2009 to follow the methods used in other Okanagan Valley SEI projects.
