Two New Ecosystem Inventories Underway

Building on the success of the Sensitive Eco-systems Inventory for east Vancouver Island and Gulf Islands, two new ecosystem inventories are getting underway.

Over the next four years, the Sunshine Coast SEI will map the coastal lowland from Howe Sound to Desolation Sound and the islands in the northern Strait of Georgia. This project will be a partner-ship between Environment Canada, the Ministry of Environment Lands and Parks, and the Sunshine Coast Regional District, with involve-ment from many others including the Sechelt Indian Government District, Powell River Regional District, municipalities and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. Funding is being provided by the Georgia Basin Ecosystem Initiative, Habitat Conservation Trust Fund and Sunshine Coast Regional District.

For more information contact Peggy Ward, Canadian Wildlife Service, phone (250) 752-9611.

The Central Okanagan Regional District is embarking on a Terrestrial Ecosystem Mapping (TEM) project. One of the products of this project will be an SEI-style map that will assist in local land use planning.
