Eastern Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands lost
nearly 1500 hectares (ha) of sensitive ecosystems between 1992 and
2002.

Map of Study Area]
B.C.’s Sensitive Ecosystems Inventory project identifies
and maps rare or fragile ecosystems. Studies on the east coast
of Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands show that between 1992
and 2002:
-
1464 hectares of sensitive ecosystems were lost, a total
reduction of 4.5%.
-
The greatest loss was of older forests, which were reduced
by 8.6%. Riparian ecosystems (streamside vegetation) were
reduced by 4.6%.
-
7363 hectares of older second-growth forest were disturbed
or lost, a 16% decrease in area.
- Most losses over the 10-year period were due to logging and
clearing, which removed 1176 hectares of sensitive ecosystems
and also 6833 hectares of older second-growth forest (not shown).
