The BC Conservation Data Centre lists 84 vertebrate species or subspecies (16% of the provincial total), 257 vascular plants (11%),
9 dragonflies (10%) and 12 butterflies (7%) as Threatened or Endangered.

The greatest threat to species at risk in British Columbia is habitat loss through activities such as urban development, agriculture and timber management. The number of species at risk is highest in the southern regions of the province, where a high level of biodiversity coincides with rapid human development.
