Source: Ministry of Water, Land and Air Protection, 2001.

Per capita emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in British Columbia decreased by 6.3% between 1990 and 1999. Total emissions increased by 20% over the same time period. The increase in total GHG emissions was partly due to population growth, but increased emissions from the transportation sector played the largest role.

The transportation sector is the single largest source of GHG emissions in British Columbia, producing 42% of the total. If current trends continue, the increase in British Columbia’s total GHG emissions from 1990 to 2010 is expected to be 38%, one of the largest predicted increases in Canada.
