SOURCES: Environment Canada, Municipal Water Use (MUD) data, 2001. Ministry of Water, Land and Air Protection. Summary of Municipal Treatment Facilities, 2001.

As of 1999, 7% of British Columbians with municipal wastewater treatment were served by only preliminary treatment (screening removes solids), 29% were served by primary treatment (settling chambers remove material) and 63% were served by secondary (suspended material removed) or tertiary treatment (targeted nutrients removed). The percentage of the population served by secondary treatment doubled from 1996 to 1999 after the Annacis and Lulu islands wastewater treatment plants on the Fraser River were upgraded.
