User's Guide For TEM_WHM.AML

File Management

User Controlled Files

If you store more than one TEM coverage in one workspace, be sure that the first three letters of each coverage are unique from the first three letters of other TEM coverages. If they are the same, then tem_whm may not function properly. For example, don't name two TEM coverages with names such as KIRBY1 and KIRBY2. However, K1 and K2 will be okay. Similarly KIRBY1 and CANUM will be okay.

At least 3 user-supplied INFO files are needed for tem_whm to function. For example, if you have a coverage named CANUM, then the 3 files are:

File Name Description
CANUM.PAT The spatial data.
CANUM.TEM The ecosystem database.
CANUM.*RAT One or more ratings tables. (Can be made with the tem_whr AML)

Cleaning up

If you already ran tem_whm, and now want to rerun tem_whm with an updated ecosystem database, you will need to do some minor clean-up in order for the updates to be rocognized when generating new themes. First, delete all the themes that were created (use the 'Delete a theme' option from the MANAGE-THEMES menu). Second, manually remove the following fields from the ecosystem database file: CALC_ITEM, SUITABILITY_EU1, SUITABILITY_EU2, SUITABILITY_EU3, CAPABILITY_EU1, CAPABILITY_EU2, CAPABILITY_EU3.

TEM_WHM Controlled Files

INFO Files

Tem_whm makes four standard scheme files. These files store the ratings and colors for the standards wildlife rating schemes and are named TWO_CLASS.SCH, FOUR_CLASS.SCH, SIX_CLASS.SCH, and EFFECT.SCH.

Tem_whm sets up infrastructure for keeping track of colours by making an INFO file named COLOR_NAMES_INDEX.

In an Arc Attribute Table (AAT) is not available for the TEM project (coverage), tem_whm will make an AAT.

Tem_whm makes several INFO files in the current workspace for keeping track of themes that you make. For example, if the name of the TEM project (coverage) is COK, then the following INFO files are made.

INFO File Name
COK_THEMES
COK_CELL_SIMPLE
COK_CELL_ANNULI
COK_CELL_MINIMUM_AREA
COK_CELL_WEIGHTED
COK_CELL_NONWEIGHTED
COK_CELL_REPLACE
COK_POLYGON_SIMPLE
COK_POLYGON_WEIGHTED
COK_POLYGON_NONWEIGHTED
COK_ATTRIBUTE_ADJUSTMENT
COK_EFFECT

If you make a dot-denisty theme, and you ask to display the theme, tem_whm will make an INFO file named <tem_name>_T#_DDD. Where <tem_name> is the name of the coverage, # represents a unique number, and DDD stands for dot-density display. This file is made to speed the display of dot-density themes. When you delete a dot-density theme, this file will be deleted automatically.

System Files

Tem_whm makes a file named capsu.shd in the current workspace.

Tem_whm makes a directory named tem_whm_support and puts several menus and help files inside the directory.

During execution, tem_whm will make many temporary system files in the current workspace. These files will be named by using 'xy' followed by the first 3 letters of the coverage name. Tem_whm will manage these files as necessary.

If you make a cell-based themes, then tem_whm will make a system file named <tem_name>_T#.clr. This is a colormap file that makes it easy to view the cell-based theme with ArcView or the provincial government's GOAT. When you delete the cell-based theme, the colormap file will be deleted automatically.
