Species
Inventory Data System (SPI)
The Species Inventory (SPI) Data System is a provincial database that
is designed to facilitate the storage and access of inventory results
for wildlife species observations.
For detailed information on the types of data that are included in
this dataset, go to the Land
Information BC Discovery Service and enter “SPI” in
the search criteria.
This dataset can also be queried via Species
Inventory Web Explorer (SIWE) to find out which wildlife species
inventory projects have been incorporated into the provincial database
and what data and/or reports are available for downloading.
The SPI Data System is composed of the following databases and applications:
Databases
- SPI Data Capture Database: Stores the information entered
for wildlife inventory projects (E.g. species, UTM coordinates, date,
, sampling conditions, sampling effort, wildlife habitat features)
and incidental wildlife sightings.
- SPI Operational Database: Stores the wildlife inventory
projects migrated from the SPI Data Capture database as well as their
associated documents.
- Taxonomy Database: Contains taxonomic classification schemes
and codes.
Applications
- SPI Data Capture Application: An application that is used
to enter information from a species inventory project directly into
the SPI Data Capture Database. This method of submitting data is now
only available to government employees. If you are a government employee
and would like access to this application please email the SPI
Application Manager. If you are not a government employee and
would like to submit data please go to Data
Contributions.
- Species Inventory Web Explorer (SIWE) Application:
A web browser based application available to the public that is used
to explore wildlife inventory projects including their associated
documents/deliverables that have been entered into the SPI Data System.
- SPI Administration: This application is used by the SPI
Data Manager for managing security based on user roles, to maintain
reference data or codes, and to maintain the definitions of observation
forms.
