* Species Codes:
What are those four-letter codes for? - Actually they are quite
useful! By using standardised codes based on the scientific name of
each animal, we can be sure that everyone is talking about the same
creature. Common (English) names are not precise and the scientific
names can be a bit of a mouthful. On the Frogwatch Sighting Form you
will notice that a five-letter code is needed - that is just the
code you see above plus an "A" at the beginning to show it is an
Amphibian (for example, a Great Basin Spadefoot would be A-SPIN) or
an "R" to show it is a reptile like a turtle.
** Species Rankings:
B.C.
R=Red List; B=Blue List; Yc=Yellow List, conservation concern;
Ye=Yellow List, managed at ecosystem level; I=Introduced.
National
E=Endangered; SC=Special Concern; UR=Under Review; NAR=Not at Risk
You can find out more about the BC system of species rankings (colourful,
aren't they?) at the Ecosystems
Branch home page or the Conservation
Data Centre. You can learn more about the national species
rankings at the Committee
on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC),
or at Endangered
Species in Canada.
