Wildlife Habitat Features - Guidance Document

The Guidance Document (PDF, 6.12MB) has been prepared to assist Forest Act and Range Act agreement holders:

  1. identify wildlife habitat features (WHFs);
  2. understand how forest and range activities may damage or render ineffective a WHF;
  3. understand reporting requirements (Forest Act agreement holders only) when a WHF is encountered; and
  4. prepare an exemption request when compliance with the Order may not be practicable.

In addition, this guidance document provides information for Forest Act and Range Act agreement holders to consider when choosing which practices to apply in order to not damage or render ineffective a WHF.

Since the WHF information sessions in early 2017, we have reduced the Guidance Document to address only the WHFs that occur in the Kootenay Boundary region.  We continue to seek comments on the clarity and comprehensiveness of the guidance document for identifying WHFs and possible mitigation strategies.  For this reason, changes to the Guidance Document will occur after the consultation period.

Please review the government responses to key comments (PDF, 35KB) from the 2017 information sessions.
