Barrier Culverts Summary
A total of 13 culverts out of the 33 visited were determined to be full or partial barriers to the upstream migration of fish. These are grouped in priority as:
High - sites 12 & 33
Moderate - sites 4 & 23
Low - sites 1, 2, 3, 6, 11, 18, 27, 28, 32
High Priority
Site 12 is located at the upper most road crossing on Deitrich Creek (Hendrix sub-basin) and obstructs rainbow trout from accessing a significant length of upstream fish habitat (~1.8 km). The pair of culverts are probably a permanent obstruction to juvenile rainbow because of insufficient burst and prolonged swimming speeds to negotiate the high water velocity. Larger adult rainbow trout are likely able to pass the culverts under lower flow regimes. The road crossing appears to have been overtopped by Dietrich Creek during a high flow event.
Site 33 is located on a unnamed creek near Spanish Lake. This creek has washed out the 7000 road in the past and appears as though it will likely wash out the road again in the future. Rainbow trout are obstructed from reaching 1.1 kms of potential upstream fish habitat due to the high water velocities within the 4 culverts. At periods of low flows, juvenile rainbow will be faced with a hanging drop and high velocities within the 3 accessible culverts. These two factors will likely prevent passage of juvenile rainbow under all flow conditions. Two of the culverts were completely submerged because of the flood event encountered at the time of this survey. Replacement of the culverts with a bridge will help to check the large amounts of sediment introduced at this site.
Moderate Priority
Site 4 is located on Speedy Creek within the Boss sub-basin. Rainbow trout are obstructed from accessing ~1.6 km of upstream fish habitat because of high culvert water velocity combined with a significant outfall drop. This site has not been surveyed for fish but it appears likely that rainbow trout will utilize the available habitat. A channel width of 3.4 m and a stream gradient of 10% suggest that a bridge should be considered.
Site 23 is located on a unnamed stream at the 10.5 km mark on the 720 Rd (Deception Main). Rainbow trout are obstructed from reaching 1.1 km of potential upstream fish habitat at all flow conditions. The outlet of the hanging culvert is positioned over a number of large boulders which are over a meter in diameter. Repositioning the culvert will involve an extensive project as the road surface is approximately 5 m above the culvert. The upstream fish habitat is moderate near the culvert and degrades to poor further upstream. Spawning habitat is present on this creek at downstream locations.
