Fish Passage - Culvert Inspection

A total of 33 sites were visited during completion procedures. The FPCI summary has grouped the sites into Barrier Culverts - 13 sites, Significant Non-Barrier Culverts - 3 sites, Passable Culverts - 19 sites. Two of the Significant Non-Barrier Culverts (SNBC) are included with the Passable Culverts and the other SNBC is a partial barrier but has not been included with the Barrier Culverts.

The procedures outlined in Draft 3B, April 1998 FISH PASSAGE - CULVERT INSPECTION were used to complete form A (Fish Passage - Culvert Inspection), form B (Summary Table), form C (Other Priority Culvert Crossings Summary Table) and the 1:50 000 TRIM based coverage with numbered and colour coded culvert symbols. An additional code has been added to the TRIM coverage to denote non-fish bearing sites (brown colour code). These non-fish bearing sites were surveyed because TRIM interpretation indicated that fish presence was likely based on gradient and proximity to known fish bearing reaches. The habitat encountered at these sites would not support fish.

Fish stream crossing prioritization criteria are based on the following;

The FPCI scoring matrix was used to produce scores for each Barrier Culvert site and then to break the sites into Priority Classes. The score and priority rank are reported in the FPCI Summary Table. These classes were;

Priority Class Score

High 45-33

Moderate 32-26

Low 25-12

The rankings for the Significant Non-Barrier Culverts were subjectively based on the fish stream crossing prioritization criteria.

The reference used in each photograph is a meter stick with pink flagging tape.
