A Guide to Evaluating Forest Stands as Terrestrial
Forage Lichen Habitat for Caribou
The Guide to Evaluating Forest Stand as Terrestrial Lichen
Habitat for Caribou was developed by Art N. Lance and
Warren G. Eastland , Industrial Forest Service Ltd. for
the Wildlife Branch, Ministry of Environment, Lands and
Parks (MELP) and was funded by Forest Renewal B.C. CLUPE
Project #: OP713669.
The focus of this guide is the identification of forest
stand types where terrestrial lichen are abundant. It
provides a stepwise, hierarchical structure to eliminate
stand types that don't need inspection and uses direct
estimate of lichen abundance for sites that do need inspection.
This guide meets the Fort St. James Land and Resource
Management Plan (LRMP) objectives for lichen assessment
methodology that is acceptable to MELP for forest development
planning.
