Wildlife Management

Wildlife management in the Vancouver Island Region focuses on both game species and non-game species.  The Regional Office in Nanaimo is responsible for wildlife management on Vancouver Island and portions of the Mainland Coast.  Some examples of work conducted in the office include:

  • conducting applied research and inventory on regionally important wildlife species in Region 1
  • administering the Wildlife Act of British Columbia;
  • assisting in the preparation of the hunting and trapping regulations and all hunting synopses. For more detailed information regarding 'Hunting and Trapping in British Columbia, click here;
  • administering the process for licenses and permits;
  • collecting and analyzing hunter and harvest data;
  • developing and coordinating Wildlife Program's input to the treaty negotiation process;
  • determining values associated with wildlife-related activities such as hunting, viewing and trapping;
  • disseminating information to the public, decision-makers, staff and others;
  • Members of the Wildlife Program work with the staff of the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation (HCTF) in its efforts to restore, improve and protect wildlife habitat. Wildlife staff work closely with the staff of Wild BC, an environmental education program administered by HCTF that provides a wide range of environmental educational programs and resources to teachers and outdoor educators. Wildlife staff also work with Naturescape British Columbia, a program that encourages restoration, preservation, and enhancement of wildlife habitat in our urban and rural landscapes.
