Categories of Species

The Minister responsible for the Wildlife Act may establish one or more categories identifying species of wildlife as species at risk, regionally important wildlife or ungulate species. The authority to take this action is enabled by section 13 of the Government Actions Regulation. The establishment of categories of species enables a number of other provisions under the Forest and Range Practices Act to be used to manage these wildlife species including wildlife habitat areas, ungulate winter ranges and associated general wildlife measures and objectives.

Species at Risk

On May 3, 2004 the Minister of Water Land and Air Protection established a category of species at risk by order made under section 11(1) of the Government Actions Regulation (BC Reg. 17/04) of the Forest and Range Practices Act. This category of species at risk represents those species that may be affected by forest or range management on Crown land and are listed by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada COSEWIC). On May 30, 2005 one species was appended to the category of species at risk and in June 2006 the Minister of Environment appended 45 additional species and plant communities. Currently there are 85 species and plant communities included in the category of species at risk.

The 85 species included in this category of species at risk form the basis for the Identified Wildlife Management Strategy (IWMS).

Ungulate Species

On May 3, 2004 the Minister of Water Land and Air Protection established a category of ungulate species by order made under section 11(3) of the Government Actions Regulation (BC Reg. 17/04) of the Forest and Range Practices Act. This category of ungulate species represents those species for which an ungulate winter range may be required for winter survival. Notification of this order was published in the May 6, 2004 edition of the BC Gazette.
